A young woman serving as a home guard was discovered dead inside her living quarters at the Canning police station in South 24 Parganas district, sparking serious allegations of murder against a police officer. The incident has led to the immediate suspension of the accused officer and the initiation of a departmental inquiry.
Tragic Discovery at Police Station Quarters
The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Gulzan Parvin Molla, a resident of Uttar Moukhali under Joynagar police station jurisdiction. According to police accounts, Gulzan had returned to her quarters, located behind the Canning police station, after completing her duty on Friday. When her family could not reach her by phone throughout the day, they grew concerned and went to the station.
Her sister, Ruksana Khatun, went to check the quarters and found the door partially bolted from the inside. Upon opening it, she made the grim discovery of Gulzan hanging from the ceiling. Police were informed immediately, and the body was sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
Family Points Finger, Alleges Foul Play
The victim's family has vehemently rejected the possibility of suicide, alleging instead that Gulzan was murdered. They have specifically accused Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sayan Bhattacharya, who was posted at the same Canning police station, of being responsible for her death.
The family claims that the officer had trapped Gulzan in a relationship and later killed her. Gulzan had been appointed as a home guard approximately two years ago, following the tragic murder of her father, Rashid Molla, a cloth trader, during the panchayat elections in Bhangar.
Suspension and Ongoing Investigation
Confirming the swift administrative action, Ram Mondal, the SDPO of Canning, stated, "The officer, against whom allegations were made, has been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been started."
Meanwhile, the police have launched a detailed probe to ascertain whether the death was a case of suicide or murder. Investigators are recording statements from family members and colleagues of the deceased. The final conclusion is awaited, pending the findings of the forensic report and the official post-mortem report, which will be crucial in establishing the exact cause of death.
