A day after a fatal road accident on the Mahabubnagar bypass road involving a Hayabusa superbike claimed five lives, it has emerged that police have booked all the remaining riders, along with their Mahabubnagar host, under Section 105 of the BNS for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Investigators have also begun examining CCTV footage from multiple locations to identify those involved and reconstruct the sequence of events.
Preliminary findings suggest that 15 youngsters from Hyderabad travelled to Mahabubnagar town on 12 motorcycles and a car. While two of them died in the crash, the others allegedly fled the scene instead of staying back after the accident.
The incident occurred around 12:30 am on Monday on the Mahabubnagar bypass road in the Palakonda area. A speeding Hayabusa bike, suspected to be cruising at approximately 160 kmph, crashed into a sedan that was taking a right turn at a median opening. Two persons on the bike and three passengers, including two children sitting in the rear seat of the sedan, died in the accident.
Police have identified that the group attended a family function of a local businessman Md Jahangeer at a function hall in Mahabubnagar around 10:30 pm on Sunday. Authorities have summoned him to identify the bikers.
In his complaint, Md Arif, a relative of the deceased car passengers, alleged that despite being aware of the risks associated with high-speed riding on the bypass road, Jahangeer had invited the group to Mahabubnagar. He further stated that the accident occurred while they were returning from the event.
Sub-inspector G. Vijay Kumar confirmed that a case has been registered under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 125(a) (causing hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the BNS on Monday night against Jahangeer and the bikers.
During questioning, Jahangeer reportedly stated that he knew only some of the bikers through Instagram. Police said that due to the late hour and heavy traffic movement, identifying all individuals involved was initially difficult. A team has since been dispatched to Hyderabad to trace the remaining suspects. According to investigators, the invitation to the function was shared among the bikers on their WhatsApp group, leading to 15 of them arriving in Mahabubnagar on multiple bikes and a car. After the crash, 13 of them allegedly left the scene and returned to Hyderabad without waiting for the authorities. Police have so far identified some of the bikers and the car driver as Ben, Atif, Wasim, Omer, and Azam. Efforts are ongoing to trace them and identify the remaining individuals involved in what investigators describe as dangerously reckless driving behaviour, a Mahabubnagar police officer said.
