Indian National Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault on Flight to Australia
An Indian man has been taken into custody following accusations of sexually assaulting a female passenger seated beside him during an international flight to Australia. The incident has sparked outrage and highlighted safety concerns for travelers confined in aircraft cabins.
Details of the Alleged Mid-Flight Attack
According to reports from the Australian Federal Police (AFP), 52-year-old Sudhir Kumar Chahuan is alleged to have attacked a woman on a Scoot Airlines flight traveling from Singapore to Perth on Monday. The assault reportedly occurred mid-flight, causing significant distress to the victim.
The distressed passenger immediately notified cabin crew members, who responded promptly by relocating her to a different seat for her safety. Airline staff then closely monitored Chahuan for the remainder of the journey after alerting authorities on the ground about the situation.
Swift Police Action Upon Arrival in Perth
Upon the aircraft's landing in Perth, police officers were waiting at the airport and arrested Chahuan without delay. He has since been formally charged with serious offenses, including sexual intercourse without consent and multiple counts of indecency without consent.
"Every passenger has the right to feel safe when traveling, especially when confined in an aircraft close to other passengers," stated AFP Acting Superintendent Peter Brindal in an official statement. He emphasized the importance of reporting such incidents, adding, "Anyone subjected to alleged unwanted contact is encouraged to alert the authorities, be it airline staff, the AFP or airport security, as soon as it is safely possible to do so. No act of indecency on an aircraft or at an airport is appropriate, and any travelers who break the law will be dealt with swiftly."
Legal Proceedings and Custody Status
The identity of the accused was confirmed by The West Australian newspaper. Chahuan remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on Friday, as legal proceedings continue to unfold.
