Indore Police Launches First Digital Malkhana for Evidence Management
Indore Police Inaugurates Digital Malkhana

In a significant advancement towards modern policing and transparency, the Indore Police officially launched its inaugural digital malkhana at the Gandhi Nagar police station on Saturday. This innovative facility marks a pivotal shift from traditional manual record-keeping to a sophisticated QR-code-based smart tracking system, designed to enhance the handling of seized property, commonly referred to as case property.

Enhancing Transparency and Efficiency in Policing

The introduction of the digital malkhana is a strategic component of the smart policing initiative, aimed at fortifying the chain of custody and bolstering public confidence in law enforcement processes. During the inauguration ceremony, Indore Police Commissioner Santosh Kumar Singh emphasized that this move represents a crucial step in leveraging technology to safeguard the interests of citizens and improve investigative efficiency.

With this development, Gandhi Nagar police station has become the second facility in Madhya Pradesh to implement this high-tech evidence management system, following a collaborative effort with the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB).

How the Digital Malkhana Works

The system digitizes the entire lifecycle of seized items, transforming how evidence is stored and monitored. Key features include:

  • Real-Time Monitoring: Information about the type, quantity, and current status of any seized property is now accessible instantly with a simple click, eliminating the need for cumbersome manual searches.
  • Secure Documentation: Each seized item is meticulously photographed and documented, ensuring a comprehensive digital record.
  • Advanced Tracking: A unique barcode is generated for individual items, while a QR code is attached to their storage boxes or vehicles, enabling precise location tracing at any moment.
  • Tamper-Proof Logs: The system maintains a detailed digital log of all movements, recording exactly who deposited or retrieved an item and when, thereby minimizing risks of unauthorized tampering or evidence loss.

Benefits for Police Operations

Senior police officials highlighted several operational advantages of the digital malkhana:

  1. Streamlined Inspections: Inspections no longer require sifting through dusty manual registers, saving time and reducing errors.
  2. Automated Reporting: The software automatically generates stock reports and detailed log histories, facilitating better management and accountability.
  3. Remote Monitoring: High-ranking officials can oversee malkhana activities from any location using a web-based smart dashboard and mobile application, enhancing oversight and responsiveness.

Commissioner Singh reiterated the Indore Police's commitment to integrating modern technology into their operations, stating that this initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance transparency and efficiency in policing. The digital malkhana is expected to set a new standard for evidence management in the region, contributing to more reliable investigations and increased public trust.
