A prison inmate was shot dead near Civil Hospital Hoshiarpur on Saturday after he allegedly attacked a constable with a knife and tried to escape while being taken back from a medical examination, police said.
Incident Details
Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Malik stated that Constable Jasdeep Singh first fired a warning shot before opening fire on the inmate, identified as Nasib Singh. The confrontation occurred after Nasib allegedly tried to snatch the policeman's weapon during a scuffle.
Police reported that four personnel had escorted three inmates from the jail to the civil hospital for medical check-ups. Constable Jasdeep Singh was transporting Nasib towards an ambulance in an e-rickshaw when the inmate allegedly attacked him with a knife.
Constable Injured
The constable sustained injuries on his face, foot, and other parts of his body during the attack. Despite the warning shot, the accused continued his assault and attempted to seize the weapon. In response, the constable fired at him, the SSP explained.
Nasib was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Background of the Inmate
Police disclosed that Nasib, in his mid-30s, was facing seven criminal cases, including charges of murder, attempt to murder, and violations under the NDPS Act. He was both a convict and an undertrial in separate cases.
