Assistant Jail Superintendent Faces FIR in Samastipur Dowry Death Case

In a tragic incident highlighting the persistent evil of dowry demands, an assistant jail superintendent has been formally charged following the death of his wife in Samastipur district. The case has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised serious questions about accountability among public officials.

Woman Found Hanging in Sherpur Village

Shweta Kumari, a resident originally from Patna's Agam Kuan area, was discovered hanging at her residence in Sherpur village under the jurisdiction of Vidyapatinagar police station on Wednesday night. The discovery prompted immediate police action and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The victim's family has vehemently rejected the suicide theory, alleging instead that the scene was deliberately staged to conceal what they believe was a cold-blooded murder. According to their formal complaint, Shweta's husband, Nandu Choudhary, and his family members had been relentlessly pressuring her for additional dowry payments.

Dowry Demands and Harassment Allegations

Shashibhushan Chaudhary, Shweta's elder brother, provided disturbing details about the ongoing harassment his sister endured. "Her marriage was solemnized according to Hindu rituals on May 21, 2023," he stated. "At the time of the wedding, our family provided substantial dowry items including a car and various household goods. Despite this, Shweta faced continuous harassment for even more dowry."

The specific demands that allegedly led to the tragedy were particularly extravagant:

  • A brand new SUV vehicle
  • Cash amounting to Rs 10 lakh

According to the brother's account, the in-laws had threatened Shweta when these demands weren't met. He further revealed that approximately twenty days prior to her death, Shweta had been physically assaulted at her in-laws' home. This incident prompted their father to intervene and seek community mediation, during which the in-laws reportedly apologized and promised such behavior wouldn't recur.

Police Investigation and Official Response

Vidyapatinagar Station House Officer Suraj Kumar confirmed the seriousness of the allegations. "The matter appears to be directly linked to dowry harassment," he stated. "Based on the application submitted by the victim's brother, we have registered a comprehensive case of dowry-related death and harassment against the husband and other family members."

The police investigation has revealed several concerning details:

  1. The accused officer, Nandu Choudhary, has been completely untraceable since taking an 11-day leave beginning February 11
  2. His leave application cited his daughter's serious illness as the reason for immediate departure
  3. A specialized forensic team has been deployed to collect crucial evidence from the scene
  4. The victim's family has expressed grave concern about the whereabouts of the couple's 14-month-old daughter, who remains missing

Employment Details and Behavioral Patterns

Snehlata, the Superintendent of Darbhanga Jail where Nandu Choudhary was posted, provided additional context about the accused officer's professional conduct. "Nandu was posted to Darbhanga in July 2025," she explained. "Although he was allocated government accommodation as per protocol, he chose to live alone and never brought his wife to reside with him at the official quarters."

However, she noted a contradictory pattern in his personal behavior: "Despite living separately from his family, Nandu regularly shared videos and social media reels featuring his wife and daughter on various platforms. This discrepancy between his online presence and actual living arrangements raises important questions."

The case continues to develop as police intensify their search for the absconding in-laws and work to locate the missing child. The tragedy has reignited conversations about dowry-related violence in the region and the need for stronger enforcement of anti-dowry laws, particularly when the accused hold positions of public trust and authority.
