Jaipur Woman Fatally Injured After Van Runs Over and Drags Her 15 Feet
A tragic incident unfolded in Jaipur on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 63-year-old woman after she was run over and dragged by a van outside her home. The victim, identified as Kalawati Gurjar, succumbed to her injuries during treatment at a hospital, according to police reports.
Details of the Accident in Chaudhary Colony, Kartarpura
The accident occurred around 1 pm in Chaudhary Colony, Kartarpura, when Kalawati Gurjar stepped out of her house due to breathing difficulties related to asthma. She was sitting near her home when a van, which was parked in the lane, suddenly moved towards her. The vehicle hit her, dragged her approximately 15 feet along the road, and then ran over her, causing grievous injuries.
Police stated that construction work was underway at a neighboring house, with cement lying outside, which may have contributed to the chaotic scene. Two individuals who were speaking with Kalawati at the time managed to step back just in time, narrowly escaping the accident themselves.
Immediate Response and Aftermath
Residents rushed to the scene after hearing the commotion and quickly took Kalawati to a nearby private hospital. Unfortunately, doctors declared her dead during treatment. Her body was subsequently shifted to Jaipuria Hospital for a postmortem examination.
On Thursday, police handed over the body to her family after the autopsy was completed. Family members revealed that Kalawati's husband, Hanuman Sahay, had passed away due to illness about a month prior, adding to the tragedy.
Police Investigation and Arrest
The driver of the van, identified as Mahendra Kumar, fled the scene immediately after the accident. However, DCP (South) Rajarshi Raj Varma confirmed that Mahendra Kumar was arrested late on Thursday night following a police investigation. Authorities are continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine any negligence or violations.
This incident has raised concerns about road safety in residential areas, especially during construction activities. Police are urging residents to exercise caution and report any unsafe practices to prevent such accidents in the future.
