Jamshedpur Residents Stage Massive Protest Demanding Justice for Tea Stall Attack Victim
In a powerful display of public outrage, citizens from diverse backgrounds flooded the streets of Jamshedpur on Saturday, vociferously demanding the immediate apprehension of a group of men accused of a brutal attack on a local woman. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the industrial city, involved the assailants allegedly throwing scalding hot tea on the victim, causing severe burn injuries.
MLA Steps Forward to Support Victim's Recovery
In a significant development, Jamshedpur (West) MLA Saryu Roy has publicly committed to covering all outstanding hospital expenses for Mehendi Kumari, the 30-year-old victim currently undergoing treatment. Kumari is recuperating in the specialized burn unit of Tata Main Hospital, where medical staff report a gradual but steady improvement in her condition.
Police authorities have confirmed that one individual has been taken into custody in connection with the assault, but the search for the remaining suspects continues with heightened urgency.
Detailed Account of the Traumatic Incident
The attack unfolded on April 7 near the Tata Football Academy in Bistupur, where Mehendi Kumari operates a small tea stall. According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, a group of men arrived in a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and placed an order for tea. Growing impatient with what they perceived as a delay in service, the group began hurling verbal abuses at Kumari.
Despite her attempts to pacify the agitated customers, the situation escalated rapidly. In a moment of shocking violence, the assailants seized a saucepan containing freshly brewed, boiling tea and deliberately threw the contents directly at Kumari. The scalding liquid caused significant burn injuries to her face, neck, hands, and abdominal area before the group fled the scene in their vehicle.
Family and Community Rally Behind the Victim
Ankit Kumar, Mehendi's brother and a resident of Sonari, provided an update on her medical status. "While there has been a slight improvement in her health, she has not yet made a full recovery. She remains under continuous medical supervision and treatment," he stated, highlighting the ongoing challenges in her recovery process.
The Jharkhand Khsatriya Sangh organized a coordinated protest march to the district police headquarters, submitting a formal memorandum that insists on the prompt arrest of all individuals involved. Shambhu Singh, president of the organization, drew a stark comparison, stating, "This horrific act is equivalent to throwing acid on a woman's face. Law enforcement must ensure all perpetrators face the strictest possible punishment, setting a powerful legal precedent for future generations."
Growing Public and Digital Campaign for Justice
A parallel social media movement titled "Justice for Mehendi" has gained substantial traction, amplifying calls for accountability and systemic change. Senior Superintendent of Police (City) Kumar Shivashish personally addressed the protesting delegation, offering assurances that the police department is fully committed to apprehending every individual connected to the crime and ensuring they receive the harshest penalties under the law.
The community's unified response underscores a collective determination to seek justice and support the victim through her arduous recovery journey, while demanding stronger protections for women and street vendors in urban spaces.
