Fear has gripped shopkeepers in Govindpuri market, Modinagar, following the tragic killing of a 75-year-old jeweller during an attempted robbery. The incident prompted a complete market shutdown on Thursday as traders protested against what they call police inaction and a deteriorating law and order situation.
Market Protests and Demands for Security
The victim, identified as Girdhari Lal, was attacked in his shop. In response, the entire market remained closed, with shopkeepers demanding an immediate security review and increased police presence. They argue that the absence of regular patrols has emboldened criminals in the area.
Amitesh Jain, chairman of the Modinagar Uttar Pradesh Vypaar Mandal, highlighted the scale of the area, stating it houses four colleges, five banks, and over 600 shops, including 40 jewellery stores. He lamented the lack of a visible police force for several months. "If some police personnel were seen on the road or police patrolling at regular intervals, this murder wouldn't have taken place. Criminals wouldn't commit crimes if there were CCTV cameras or police," Jain asserted.
A History of Unchecked Crime?
Shopkeepers expressed deep frustration over recurring crimes and perceived police failure. Sudheer Singh, a local trader, pointed out that the Govindpuri police chowki is just a few hundred metres away, yet patrolling is inconsistent. He revealed a disturbing pattern of unresolved incidents:
- Two years ago, a robbery was attempted at Girdhari Lal's shop, but the accused were never caught.
- Recently, a theft occurred at a mobile shop next to Lal's store, with the culprits again remaining at large.
"The police have a role in maintaining law and order, but they failed to do so," Singh said bluntly.
Taking Security Into Their Own Hands
Faced with insecurity, the trading community is now proactively enhancing its own security measures. Following a meeting of shop owners, a multi-pronged plan is being implemented:
- Installing CCTV cameras at every shop and checking existing ones to ensure they are functional.
- Considering the hiring of a private security agency for round-the-clock market protection.
- Specifically advising jewellery shops to employ armed guards.
- Preparing to write a formal letter to the government demanding increased security in market areas.
Jain emphasized the urgency, stating the community is "taking lessons from Girdhari's murder."
In response to the outcry, Surendra Nath Tiwari, DCP of Rural, claimed that police patrolling was being conducted at regular intervals previously. However, he acknowledged that patrolling has now been doubled in the area, with an additional team of bike-borne 'cheetah' cops deployed to bolster security and reassure the frightened business community.
