J&K Police Files UAPA Chargesheet Against Doctor and Wife for Alleged Secessionist Social Media Activity
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken a significant legal step by filing a formal chargesheet under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against a doctor and his wife. The chargesheet, submitted on Wednesday, accuses the couple of allegedly misusing various social media platforms to disseminate content that promotes secessionist ideologies and spreads misleading narratives about the region.
Details of the Chargesheet and Arrests
The chargesheet was officially filed by the police's specialized Counter-Intelligence Kashmir wing before the special National Investigation Agency court. The individuals named in the document are Dr Umer Farooq Bhat, a resident of Kulgam, and his wife, Shahzada Akther. Both were arrested last year following an intensive investigation into their online activities.
In a detailed statement released by the CIK, authorities revealed that a case was initially registered against the couple at the CIK police station in Srinagar. The case was filed under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the UAPA after law enforcement agencies obtained what they described as credible and reliable information.
Allegations of Criminal Conspiracy and Misinformation
The police statement alleges that Shahzada Akther, in what is characterized as a well-planned criminal conspiracy, collaborated with members of the proscribed terrorist organization Dukhtaran-e-Millat. Furthermore, the CIK claims she acted in active connivance with her husband, Dr Umer Farooq Bhat.
The core of the allegation centers on their purported involvement in the deliberate creation and dissemination of false, fabricated, and distorted narratives specifically regarding the situation in Kashmir. According to the chargesheet, the content shared by the couple was not merely inflammatory but was strategically designed with specific malicious intents.
Stated Objectives of the Alleged Content
The CIK's chargesheet outlines the alleged purposes behind the social media posts attributed to the accused. The primary objectives, as stated by the police, were threefold:
- To actively promote secessionist and separatist sentiments among the populace.
- To foster a climate of disaffection and social discord within the region.
- To deliberately generate feelings of hatred and enmity against the Union of India.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts by security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir to monitor and legally address online activities perceived as threats to national integrity and public order. The use of the UAPA, a law with provisions for dealing with unlawful associations and activities, underscores the serious nature of the allegations leveled against the doctor and his wife. The legal proceedings will now move forward in the special NIA court, where the evidence presented by the Counter-Intelligence Kashmir wing will be examined in detail.
