The Jubilee Hills police have prevented Mohammed Raheel Aamir, son of former BRS MLA Mohammed Shakeel, from traveling to Dubai as he remains under investigation in a fatal hit-and-run case from 2022. The case was registered at the Jubilee Hills police station.
Travel restrictions imposed
Police officials stated that Raheel, who had returned from Dubai two weeks ago and surrendered before the Jubilee Hills police after securing anticipatory bail from the High Court, had booked a ticket to travel abroad on Thursday. Acting on intelligence received through informants, officers contacted him and informed him that he did not have permission to leave the country. A Jubilee Hills police official explained that Raheel was told the Look Out Circular (LoC) issued against him in the case remained in effect and that the High Court had only permitted him to enter India to surrender before investigators. He subsequently appeared at the Jubilee Hills police station on Friday, where officers reiterated that he could not travel overseas while the investigation was ongoing. Police noted that he would have been stopped at the airport due to the active LoC.
Details of the 2022 accident
The case pertains to an accident that occurred on March 17, 2022, on Road No 45 in Jubilee Hills. According to police allegations, an SUV driven by Raheel struck Kajal, a balloon seller. Kajal sustained injuries, while her two-and-a-half-month-old son died after being thrown onto the road from the impact. Investigators said Raheel fled the scene following the crash. Two other occupants in the vehicle, identified as Syed Afnan Ahmed, a BBA student, and Maaz Moheet Khan, also allegedly fled, leaving the SUV behind. Initially, Afnan claimed he had been driving the vehicle, and police booked him in the case.
Reopening of investigation
The probe took a new direction in December 2023 after a separate incident in which a BMW allegedly driven by Raheel crashed into a barricade near Praja Bhavan. During that inquiry, police suspected that Raheel had again attempted to have another person take responsibility. CCTV footage later identified him as the driver, leading to a case being registered and the suspension of the Punjagutta inspector for dereliction of duty. Following these developments, West Zone police reopened the 2022 accident case. Although a chargesheet had been filed against Afnan, investigators obtained court permission for further inquiry, re-examined Afnan and Maaz, and named Raheel as an accused in 2024.
