Justice Yashwant Varma Resigns from Allahabad High Court Amid Cash Scandal

Justice Yashwant Varma, who has been embroiled in a major controversy for over 13 months following the accidental discovery of burnt cash notes at his official residence in New Delhi, has resigned as a judge of the Allahabad High Court. In a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu on Friday, Varma stated he was resigning "with immediate effect", effectively ending what had appeared to be a promising judicial career until March 2025.

Discovery of Burnt Cash and Judicial Inquiry

The scandal began on the night of March 14-15 last year when firemen and police officials, responding to a 112 fire emergency call, stumbled upon sacks of cash at Justice Varma's Tughlaq Road bungalow in New Delhi. At the time, Varma was serving as a judge of the Delhi High Court. This accidental discovery triggered a prolonged investigation and public scrutiny.

Eyewitness testimonies from the firemen and police officials played a crucial role in the proceedings before the judges' inquiry committee, which was headed by Supreme Court Justice Aravind Kumar. This committee was established pursuant to a removal motion against Justice Varma. The evidence presented ultimately persuaded the controversial high court judge to drop his resistance and step down.

Resignation Letter and Aftermath

In his resignation letter, Justice Varma expressed deep anguish but chose not to elaborate on the reasons behind his decision. He wrote, "While I do not propose to burden your august office with the reasons which have constrained me to submit this missive, it is with deep anguish that I hereby tender my resignation from the office of the judge of Hon'ble High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, with immediate effect."

The resignation brings down the curtains on a judicial career that had shown promise but was overshadowed by the cash scandal. The incident has raised questions about accountability and transparency within the judiciary, highlighting the importance of thorough investigations in such matters.

As the news spreads, legal experts and the public are reflecting on the implications for judicial integrity and the processes in place for addressing misconduct among high-ranking officials. The case serves as a reminder of the critical role of oversight mechanisms in maintaining public trust in the judicial system.
