Kanpur Tragedy: 5-Year-Old Girl Missing After Mother Allegedly Throws Her into Yamuna River

In a deeply distressing incident in Kanpur, a five-year-old girl remains missing more than 36 hours after her mother allegedly threw her into the Yamuna River from the Marka–Asothar bridge. The incident, which occurred under the jurisdiction of the Marka police station in Banda, has prompted an intensive search operation, but the child has yet to be traced, according to police officials.

Intensive Search Operation Underway

Since Sunday morning, an 11-member State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team, along with local divers, has been conducting a thorough search of the river. The operation has involved using nets and hooks to scan nearly three kilometres of the Yamuna River. However, the child's body has not been recovered, with police citing the strong current of the river as a significant obstacle affecting the search efforts.

Officials have stated that the search operation will continue on Tuesday, with surveillance along the riverbanks being intensified to aid in the recovery efforts. The challenging conditions of the river have made the task difficult, but authorities remain committed to locating the missing child.

Details of the Alleged Incident

According to police reports, a 25-year-old woman from Usara village, who had been staying at her maternal house for the past five years, is at the center of this tragedy. On Friday afternoon, she allegedly had an argument with her mother. Following this, she left the house with her five-year-old daughter, Pinki, under the pretext of getting the child's hair cut.

Police say the woman then proceeded to the Marka–Asothar bridge, where she allegedly threw her daughter into the Yamuna River. In a further tragic turn, the woman also attempted to jump into the river herself. She used a passerby's phone to inform her mother of her intention to commit suicide, but bystanders at the spot intervened, caught hold of her, and prevented the suicide attempt.

Police Response and Investigation

A police team quickly reached the scene, took the woman into custody, and initiated a search operation with the help of divers. Mithilesh Singh, the in-charge of Marka Police Station, confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against the woman based on a complaint filed by the child's father. The woman is currently under interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.

The case has drawn significant attention from local authorities and the community, with efforts focused on both the search for the missing child and understanding the circumstances that led to this alleged act. Police are working to gather more details and ensure a thorough investigation.
