Kanpur Bus Crash: Two Pilgrims Killed, 55 Injured in Highway Collision
A tragic accident on the Etawah Highway in Kanpur on Saturday resulted in the deaths of two pilgrims and left 55 others injured, including the bus driver. The incident occurred when a tourist bus rammed into a stationary dumper that had broken down on the highway.
Details of the Fatal Collision
According to police reports, the bus was carrying 57 pilgrims from Nashik, Maharashtra, who were on a 10-day religious tour to Nepal via Ayodhya. The deceased have been identified as Bhagirathi, a 60-year-old woman from Nashik, and Manoj Yadav, 42, a resident of Kumri village in Nashik.
Dr. Ashish Sahu, Emergency Medical Officer at Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, confirmed that Bhagirathi was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital, while Manoj Yadav succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The bodies have been sent to the mortuary, and their families have been notified.
Sequence of Events and Police Investigation
DCP S M Qasim Abidi provided details of the accident, stating that the tourist bus crashed into the stationary dumper on the bridge in front of Ispat Nagar. The impact completely damaged the front portion of the bus. Following the initial collision, two containers and a truck also collided behind the bus, though fortunately, no injuries were reported from those vehicles.
Abidi suggested that driver fatigue may have been a contributing factor, noting that the driver might have dozed off at the wheel. The pilgrims had embarked on their journey from Maharashtra on Thursday, visited Ujjain Mahakal on Friday, and departed at 12:30 pm, stopping at a hotel in Bhind at 1:30 am. After having tea on Panki Highway in Kanpur on Saturday morning, the accident occurred as they proceeded forward.
Emergency Response and Medical Care
Personnel from the Panki police station promptly arrived at the scene and administered first aid to the injured at Kalyanpur Community Health Centre. All injured individuals were subsequently referred to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital for further treatment.
Of the 55 injured, 53 were admitted to LLR Hospital, while three others received care at Kanshiram Hospital. The swift response by emergency services helped prevent further casualties and ensured that the injured received timely medical attention.
