Kanpur Police Cracks Down on Major Interstate IPL Betting Network

In a significant crackdown on illegal gambling activities, the Fazalganj police in Kanpur have successfully busted an interstate gang involved in orchestrating large-scale betting operations during Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches. The operation led to the recovery of a staggering Rs 3.92 crore in cash along with crucial documents and digital devices that exposed the extensive betting network.

Operation Details and Arrests

The case unfolded following a precise tip-off from an informant, who alerted authorities about two individuals operating online betting on IPL matches from a white car parked under the Govind Nagar bridge. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, a specialized police team conducted a raid at the location, leading to the immediate arrest of Kartik Lakhwani and Rajkumar from the vehicle.

During the initial search, police recovered key clues that pointed to a more extensive operation. Subsequent interrogation of the detained suspects revealed the existence of a rented hideout in Kidwai Nagar, which served as the central hub for the betting network. A follow-up raid at this second location resulted in the arrest of three additional bookies: Kalpesh, Ravi Nai, and Vishnu.

All five arrested individuals were identified as residents of Gujarat who had been residing in Kanpur to facilitate their illegal activities. The police confirmed that the gang utilized various online apps and websites to manage bets worth crores of rupees, collecting money from participants across the city.

Seizures and Investigation

The police seizure list from the raids is extensive and includes:

  • Six mobile phones used for communication and transaction coordination.
  • Two currency note counting machines for handling large cash volumes.
  • A car employed for mobility and operational logistics.
  • Multiple digital devices containing evidence of betting operations.
  • The substantial cash amount of Rs 3.92 crore.

Authorities have identified the mastermind behind the racket as Manish, alias Professor, who is currently absconding. Several police teams have been deployed to conduct raids at various suspected locations in an effort to apprehend him. Officials have indicated that the gang's connections might extend to other states, suggesting a wider interstate network.

Legal Actions and Rewards

Cases have been formally registered against all the accused under the provisions of the Public Gambling Act. In a move to ensure comprehensive investigation, the police have written to the Income Tax Department, requesting a detailed probe into the financial aspects of the racket. The recovered cash will be handed over to the Income Tax Department for further examination and legal proceedings.

Recognizing the successful operation, Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for the police team responsible for busting the betting racket. This reward underscores the commitment of law enforcement to combat illegal gambling activities, especially during high-profile sporting events like the IPL.

The bust highlights the ongoing challenges of illegal betting in India and the sophisticated methods employed by such networks. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated police action in disrupting these operations and safeguarding the integrity of sports.
