A man has been arrested in Karnataka for allegedly cheating several youths of Rs 43 lakh by promising them jobs in the police department. The accused, identified as Ravi Kumar, was taken into custody following a complaint filed by the victims.
Modus operandi
According to the police, Ravi Kumar would approach unemployed youths and their families, claiming to have connections with high-ranking officials in the police department. He promised them government jobs in exchange for large sums of money. The victims, eager for secure employment, paid him amounts ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh each.
Complaint and investigation
The scam came to light when several victims, who had not heard from the accused after paying the money, compared notes and realized they had been duped. They approached the local police station and filed a complaint. Following an investigation, the police arrested Ravi Kumar from his hideout in a nearby town.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime and revealed that he had used the money for personal expenses. The police have recovered Rs 12 lakh from his possession and are trying to trace the remaining amount.
Police caution
The Karnataka Police have issued a warning to the public, advising them not to fall prey to such fraudulent promises. They have urged citizens to verify the credentials of any individual claiming to offer government jobs and to report any suspicious activities to the police immediately.
The accused has been remanded to judicial custody, and further investigations are ongoing to determine if he had any accomplices. The police are also checking if he was involved in similar scams in other parts of the state.
