Protests Erupt in Kashmir's Shia Areas Against US-Israel Strikes on Iran
Protests erupted on Friday in several Shia-dominated areas of Kashmir, including Magam and Budgam, in response to the recent US-Israel strikes on Iran. According to officials quoted by news agency PTI, the demonstrations were a direct reaction to the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Authorities Impose Restrictions as Precaution
Anticipating potential unrest on Juma-tul-Vida, the last Friday of Ramzan, authorities implemented restrictions in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir valley. These measures were specifically enforced in Shia-majority regions starting in the morning hours.
The restrictions on public assembly were described as a precautionary step to maintain law and order, given the high likelihood of protests following congregational prayers. Officials emphasized that the situation was being closely monitored to prevent any escalation.
Peaceful Demonstrations with Political Slogans
During the protests, participants raised slogans condemning the United States and Israel for their military actions against Iran. Additionally, voices were heard in support of Palestine, aligning with the observance of Youm-ul-Quds, which coincides with Juma-tul-Vida as a day of solidarity with Palestine.
Despite the charged atmosphere, officials confirmed that the protests remained peaceful so far, with no reports of violence or major disturbances. The demonstrators expressed their grievances without breaching public order.
Historic Jamia Masjid Closed Amid Tensions
In a significant move, authorities shut down the historic Jamia Masjid located in the Nowhatta locality of Srinagar. This action prevented thousands of Muslims from gathering for prayers on this holy day, marking the seventh consecutive year such restrictions have been imposed.
Kashmir's chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, voiced strong criticism in a social media post, stating, "On the last Friday of holy Ramzan, when tens of thousands gather from towns and villages for prayers and supplication at the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar, its gates have once again been locked from all sides."
He drew parallels to the closure of Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem by Israel during Ramzan, expressing deep sorrow and condemning those responsible for locking places of worship. "Our hearts bleed. Shame on those who lock the houses of Allah against the faithful," the Mirwaiz added, highlighting the emotional impact of these measures.
Background and Implications
The protests underscore the global reverberations of the US-Israel-Iran conflict, with local communities in Kashmir expressing solidarity with Iran and Palestine. This incident reflects the broader geopolitical tensions affecting regions far beyond the immediate conflict zones.
Authorities' decision to impose restrictions and close religious sites highlights the ongoing challenges in balancing security concerns with religious freedoms in sensitive areas. The situation remains fluid, with officials continuing to assess and respond to developments as they unfold.
