Kerala Court Grants Bail to Woman in Suicide Abetment Case Over Viral Video

The Kozhikode District Sessions Court has granted bail to a woman who was arrested on January 21 under charges of abetting suicide in connection with the death of Govindapuram native U Deepak. The woman, a resident of Chorode near Vadakara, had been in judicial custody for the past 21 days prior to this decision.

Court Imposes Strict Bail Conditions

The court granted bail to the woman but imposed several stringent conditions. She has been directed to appear before the investigating officer twice a month—specifically in the second week and the last week of each month. Additionally, the court ordered her not to influence any witnesses involved in the case. As part of the bail requirements, she must furnish a personal bond along with two sureties to secure her release.

Prosecution's Objection Overruled by Court

The prosecution had strongly argued against granting bail, insisting that it should be withheld until the forensic examination reports of the woman's mobile phone and laptop were submitted. However, the sessions court overruled this objection and proceeded with the bail decision. This ruling came after the Kunnamangalam JFCM Court had earlier rejected her bail plea, prompting her to approach the higher sessions court for relief.

Background of the Viral Video Controversy

The case stems from a controversial incident where the woman filmed Deepak, a sales executive with a textile firm, during a bus journey. She later shared the video on social media, alleging that he had touched her inappropriately during the ride at Payyanur in Kannur. The video quickly went viral, amassing over two million views within just two days of being posted.

Complaint Filed by Deceased's Mother

In a tragic turn of events, Deepak's mother, K Kanyaka, filed a complaint with the district police chief. She stated that her son died due to severe mental trauma following what she described as false allegations made by the woman in the viral video. This complaint led to the woman's arrest on charges of abetting suicide, setting the stage for the ongoing legal proceedings.

The case continues to unfold as investigations proceed, with the court's bail decision marking a significant development in this high-profile matter.
