A case of kidnapping and extortion has sent shockwaves through a neighbourhood in south Kolkata, resulting in the arrest of one suspect while the primary accused remains on the run. The incident, which involved the abduction of a local trader, was brought to the attention of the Kasba Police Station on December 14.
Complaint Details and Abduction
The police action was initiated following a formal complaint lodged by Prerona Neogi, a resident of Bosepukur Road. In her complaint, she named two individuals: Deep Banerjee and Nripen Pandey. According to the complaint, her father, Biswajit Neogi, a trader, was allegedly kidnapped from his residence at around 8:30 am on December 14.
The accused reportedly took the victim to an undisclosed location in the Tangra Colony Bazar of Bongaon in North 24 Parganas. The initial motive behind the shocking abduction was to extort a sum of Rs 1 lakh from the victim.
Police Investigation and Rescue
Swift investigation by the Kasba Police led to the successful rescue of the victim. Authorities also managed to apprehend one of the accused, Nripen Pandey. However, the main accused, identified as Deep Banerjee, is still evading arrest.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Jadavpur-SSD), Bidisha Kalita, provided crucial insight into the case's background. She clarified that the incident stemmed from a prior case of cheating. "It's a case of cheating followed by kidnapping to try and recover the cheated amount of money," DCP Kalita stated. She further revealed that the main accused, Banerjee, had allegedly cheated both the victim, Neogi, and the now-arrested co-accused, Pandey.
Current Status and Ongoing Search
The case has taken a significant turn with the arrest of Nripen Pandey. The Kolkata Police have confirmed that the rescued victim is now safe. The focus of the ongoing investigation is now squarely on tracing and apprehending the absconding main accused, Deep Banerjee. Police teams are conducting raids and following leads to bring him to justice.
This incident has highlighted concerns over such criminal activities in the city. The police have assured the public of a thorough probe and have urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of Deep Banerjee to come forward.
