Major Drug Bust in Kochi: Ernakulam Excise Arrests 29-Year-Old Trafficker
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Ernakulam excise enforcement and anti-narcotic special squad apprehended a 29-year-old man from Malappuram on Wednesday. The arrest followed the seizure of a substantial quantity of synthetic drugs during a routine vehicle inspection in the city.
Details of the Arrest and Seizure
The accused has been identified as Suhail Rashid, a resident of Angadipuram near Perinthalmanna in Malappuram district. During the initial vehicle check at Palluruthy, excise officials discovered that Rashid was in possession of 142 grams of MDMA and 3.074 grams of hashish oil. Of this contraband, 48 grams of MDMA was recovered directly from his person at the inspection site.
The vehicle used by the accused was immediately impounded by the authorities. Subsequent interrogation revealed that Rashid had been staying at a hotel in the Edappally area of Kochi. Acting on this information, excise teams conducted a follow-up search at the hotel premises.
Additional Contraband and Evidence Uncovered
The hotel search proved highly productive, leading to the recovery of an additional 94.23 grams of MDMA and approximately 4 grams of hashish oil. This brought the total seizure to over 236 grams of MDMA and about 7 grams of hashish oil. Officials also confiscated a digital weighing scale, which was allegedly used for measuring the drugs, and an iPhone from the accused's possession.
According to excise authorities, Suhail Rashid is believed to be part of an organized network involved in trafficking drugs from Malappuram to Kochi. Investigators have reportedly obtained crucial information about his supplier, and further arrests are anticipated in the coming days.
Leadership and Broader Context of the Operation
The operation was spearheaded by excise anti-narcotics special squad circle inspector Ranjith Kumar. This bust occurs against a backdrop of heightened vigilance by both police and excise departments regarding synthetic drug trafficking, particularly in relation to election periods.
One of the most notable recent seizures took place on March 28, when authorities confiscated a variety of drugs including hybrid ganja, MDMA, methamphetamine, cocaine, and ecstasy pills from a five-star hotel in Kadavanthara. That case resulted in the arrest of eight individuals, including three women.
In a separate incident, rural police seized over 550 grams of MDMA valued in the lakhs. The suspects in that case had allegedly purchased narcotics in Bangalore and traveled by motorcycle to Vaniyampara before continuing toward Kochi in a taxi for distribution purposes. They were intercepted and taken into custody at Angamaly.
The Ernakulam excise department continues to intensify its efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating in the region, with a focus on preventing the flow of synthetic substances into urban centers like Kochi.
