Kochi Man Arrested for Robbing Elderly Neighbor Using Chilli Powder Attack
In a shocking incident in Kochi, a 42-year-old man was arrested for allegedly robbing his elderly neighbor after throwing chilli powder into her eyes. The crime occurred near Ismail Mukku in Aluva East on Tuesday, targeting 70-year-old Sumathi.
Details of the Violent Robbery
The incident took place around 2 PM when the accused, identified as Nasar of Ismail Mukku, entered the victim's house while she was resting on a sofa in the hall. According to the First Information Report (FIR), Nasar threw chilli powder on Sumathi's face, temporarily blinding her, and then snatched a gold necklace from her neck.
The stolen necklace weighed approximately two-and-a-half sovereigns and included a locket. This brutal attack left the elderly woman traumatized and unable to defend herself during the robbery.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Following Sumathi's complaint, the Edathala police launched an immediate investigation. Police quickly zeroed in on Nasar as the suspect, as he was known to the victim as a neighbor. Through diligent tracking, authorities arrested him later that night.
During the investigation, police recovered parts of the stolen necklace from Nasar's motorcycle, where they had been concealed. A senior police officer stated, "The victim had suspected Nasar, and during our investigation, we managed to recover portions of the stolen chain from his bike."
Legal Charges and Judicial Proceedings
Police have booked Nasar under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
- Section 309 (robbery)
- Section 332 (house-trespass to commit an offence)
Nasar was produced before a court on Wednesday and remanded in judicial custody. Police indicated that further investigation is underway to understand the motive behind this disturbing offense.
