India Post has issued a Permanent Pictorial Cancellation featuring the 15th-century Kodigehalli hero stone, a move that brings global attention to this historical inscription. The cancellation, which depicts an archer from the stone, was unveiled on 1 July 2026, according to officials from India Post and The Mythic Society, which collaborated on the initiative.
Details of the Cancellation
The permanent cancellation is a postmark that will be used indefinitely on mail originating from the Kodigehalli post office. It showcases a sketch of the archer carved on the hero stone, along with the inscription's details. This marks the first time a hero stone from Karnataka has been honored with such a cancellation.
The Kodigehalli hero stone, dating back to 1426 CE, is a memorial stone erected in honor of a warrior who died in battle. It bears a Kannada inscription that records the hero's name and the circumstances of his death. The stone is located in Kodigehalli village, about 20 km from Bengaluru.
Significance of the Honor
According to Udaya Kumar P L, a researcher who documented the stone, the cancellation helps disseminate knowledge about the inscription to a wider audience. "A postmark cannot save a stone, but it can send its story out into the world, one postcard at a time," he said. The Mythic Society, which works to preserve Bengaluru's heritage, supported the proposal.
The cancellation is expected to attract philatelists and history enthusiasts, promoting tourism and awareness of Karnataka's medieval heritage. India Post has issued several such cancellations for historical sites, but this is a rare recognition for a hero stone.
