Kolhapur Shooting Incident: Criminal Shot After Police Meeting, Two Suspects Arrested

A violent shooting incident unfolded in Ichalkaranji, Kolhapur district, on Wednesday night, targeting a criminal-on-record who had just left a police meeting. The local crime branch (LCB) of the Kolhapur police swiftly arrested two men in connection with the attack, according to official statements.

Victim's Condition and Attack Details

The victim, identified as 22-year-old Omkar Kamble from Sangliwadi in Sangli district, sustained a critical gunshot wound to his chest, specifically the thoracic cage, leading to profuse bleeding. He was immediately rushed to CPR Hospital in Kolhapur for emergency medical treatment. Doctors have reported that Kamble's condition is now stable, and he is responding positively to the medical interventions provided.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Shooting

The police revealed that the shooting occurred after Kamble was summoned to the office of the additional police superintendent in Ichalkaranji. He had been called to discuss and understand the terms and conditions of his bail, following a previous arrest related to a fight with one of the suspects months earlier. After the meeting, as Kamble departed for his home in Sangli, two individuals—Anurag Suryawanshi, 20, and Omkar Shende, also 20, both residents of Ichalkaranji—tracked his movements.

The suspects pursued Kamble on a motorcycle along the Ichalkaranji-Sangli road. At Mahasatta Chowk, Suryawanshi allegedly aimed a firearm from the front and fired a single shot, striking Kamble in the chest. Following the attack, the two assailants fled the scene, leaving the victim critically injured.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Inspector Sushant Chavan of the LCB spearheaded the investigation, quickly gathering intelligence on the suspects' whereabouts. It was discovered that Suryawanshi and Shende were hiding in the Nadives Naka area. The police laid a strategic trap and successfully apprehended both men, bringing them into custody for further questioning.

Inspector Chavan noted that while the immediate circumstances of the shooting are clear, the underlying motive remains uncertain. "The motive of firing the shot is not yet clear," he stated, indicating that the investigation is ongoing to uncover any potential connections or disputes beyond the known altercation between Kamble and Suryawanshi.

Background and Context

This incident highlights ongoing tensions in the region, with Kamble having a criminal record and prior involvement in conflicts. The police are examining whether this attack was a retaliatory act linked to the earlier fight or if other factors are at play. The swift arrest of the suspects underscores the LCB's proactive efforts in maintaining law and order in Kolhapur.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that all legal procedures are followed as the case progresses through the judicial system.
