Kolkata: In a first-of-its-kind action, Kolkata Police arrested two men for allegedly attacking Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh with eggs on Monday evening outside the Kalighat residence of former chief minister Mamata Banerjee. The incident follows a series of egg attacks targeting Trinamool Congress leaders over the past month, with senior party figures, including national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Saugata Roy, also coming under attack.
The arrests of the main accused, Chandan, and his associate, Ravi Koyal, were made on Tuesday afternoon, hours after Ghosh lodged a formal complaint at Kalighat Police Station. According to the police, Kalighat PS case 91 was registered under BNS sections 189(2), 190, 125(a), 115(2), and 133, pertaining to unlawful assembly, acts endangering the life and safety of others, voluntarily causing hurt, and assault or criminal use of force. All the charges were bailable in nature. The accused were produced before the Alipore court, where both were granted bail.
The FIR names Chandan and several unidentified individuals, accusing them of forming an unlawful assembly near 30B, Harish Chatterjee Street on Monday evening. According to the police, the accused intentionally hurled eggs at Ghosh with the intent to cause hurt and dishonour the legislator. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
Ghosh alleged that the main accused, Chandan, is actually Chandan Singh, who had acted as a witness for the CID when the state agency conducted a search at the party office last week, located on Mamata Banerjee’s residential premises. “I’ve heard the news that two egg revolutionaries, Chandan Singh and Ravi Koyal, have been arrested for yesterday’s egg heroism. I called the police station, and they also confirmed the arrest. The concerning thing is that the police might grant bail today under a minor charge. I’ve told the station that won’t fly. The CID’s search at Mamata Banerjee’s house — where that miscreant went as a witness — is now under investigation for allegations of an attack right in front of her house,” Ghosh posted on X.
Both the Kolkata Police and the CID declined to comment, stating that details of the case involving the other agency were not available with them. In the official statement shared by Lalbazar, the police did not mention Chandan’s surname, although Ravi’s surname was included. “They may not be the same person,” a Lalbazar source claimed, adding that the matter was being verified. However, court documents identify Chandan as Chandan Singh.
Terming the incident “monkey antics” and “uncivilized behavior”, Ghosh strongly criticized the role of the local police, questioning how such a breach could occur given the heavy security presence there. Stay updated with the latest Kolkata news. Download the TOI App.
