Kolkata Police Launch Extensive Probe into Alleged Gang Rape and Human Trafficking Case
Kolkata police have initiated a comprehensive investigation and launched a two-state manhunt following disturbing allegations of gang rape through drugging and subsequent human trafficking involving a 26-year-old woman. The case, which has sent shockwaves through the community, involves accusations that the victim was lured by her own brother-in-law and his associate with false promises of a teaching job opportunity.
Detailed Account of the Alleged Crimes
According to the formal complaint filed on Monday, the victim's horrific ordeal reportedly began on February 5 when her brother-in-law and his associate, identified as Tarak Guria from Howrah, visited her residence. They allegedly persuaded her to meet what they described as a "school principal" on February 15 under the guise of a legitimate job interview.
The victim stated that she was picked up near Body Guard Lines and, during the drive toward Khidderpore, the vehicle was stopped at a secluded location under Vidyasagar Setu in the Hastings area. The accused allegedly claimed this was part of a mock job interview process.
The initial assault occurred when the woman was offered a drink that she later discovered was laced with a powerful sedative. After consuming the beverage, she began experiencing dizziness and eventually lost consciousness completely. She alleges that during this vulnerable state, the two men took turns sexually assaulting her while recording the entire act on video.
Escalation of the Crimes and Blackmail Tactics
The complaint details how the accused then used the recorded footage as leverage for further exploitation. On March 26, they allegedly blackmailed the victim using the video and forced her to travel by train to Jamshedpur against her will.
Upon arrival in Jamshedpur, she was taken to an apartment in Azad Nagar where she was allegedly confined and subjected to further sexual assaults by three additional individuals. Investigators suspect the primary accused received approximately Rs 50,000 in exchange for facilitating this exploitation.
During the return journey to Howrah the following day, the accused reportedly intensified their threats, warning the victim they would publicly label her as a sex worker using the recorded footage if she refused to participate in additional such activities.
Police Response and Legal Proceedings
After enduring sustained threats and psychological trauma over two months, during which she alleges five different men took turns assaulting her repeatedly, the woman eventually confided in her sister and a trusted friend. Following their encouragement and support, she approached law enforcement authorities to file a formal complaint.
The Hastings Police Station has registered a First Information Report under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of rape, criminal conspiracy, and human trafficking. The investigation has expanded beyond West Bengal into Jharkhand as authorities pursue leads across state lines.
