Kolkata: The city police on Monday revoked the suspension of former Kalighat Officer-in-Charge (OC) Goutam Das. He had been removed from his post on May 2 and immediately suspended after he posted on social media a now-deleted photograph of himself in uniform aiming an INSAS assault rifle, captioned "Ready for new assignment".
Details of the Revocation
The order, signed by Commissioner Ajay Nand, stated: "Inspector Goutam Das of South Division, Kolkata Police, who was placed under suspension on May 2, 2026, is released from suspension with effect from May 11. Decision in respect of the period spent by him under suspension will be taken at the time of disposal of departmental proceeding drawn up against him over the issue."
Nand indicated that departmental proceedings will continue and that the inspector is yet to be assigned a specific duty. Das, a special branch inspector, had become Kalighat OC on April 25, just four days before the Kolkata municipal elections.
Ongoing Investigation
Kolkata Police is investigating, prima facie, complaints that Das violated Election Commission guidelines, the police's internal social media policy, and service rules. Additionally, he is accused of handling the firearm illegally. Kalighat Police Station also covers part of the Bhowanipore assembly constituency.
Times of India could not independently contact Das for comment.
