Major Police Operations in Kolkata Uncover Gold, Cash, and Weapons

In a series of coordinated raids across Kolkata and surrounding areas, police have made significant seizures of gold, unaccounted cash, and illegal firearms, sparking political controversy ahead of the election season. The operations, which took place over Monday and Tuesday, targeted multiple locations and vehicles, resulting in the confiscation of assets valued at crores of rupees.

Gold and Cash Seizures in Key Constituencies

The crackdown began on Monday in the Jorasanko constituency, where police seized approximately 1,160.6 grams of gold jewelry from a vehicle on Amherst Street. The gold, estimated to be worth Rs 92.1 lakh, was being transported without valid documentation, as the occupants failed to produce any papers upon inspection. This initial seizure set the tone for further intensive operations across the city.

On Tuesday, the police intensified their efforts with a raid at the Lord Sinha Road-AJC Bose Road crossing around 12:18 pm. During this operation, a vehicle was stopped, leading to the seizure of Rs 1.5 lakh in unaccounted-for cash, which included three one-dollar currency notes. The seized amount was promptly deposited at the Shakespeare Sarani police station for further investigation and legal proceedings.

Just an hour earlier, at around 11 pm, another private car was checked at the Phoolbagan crossing, resulting in the confiscation of Rs 1.4 lakh in unaccounted-for cash. These incidents followed a similar seizure on Monday, where Rs 11.6 lakh in cash was recovered from a car on D H Road, highlighting a pattern of unaccounted monetary movements in the region.

Large-Scale Recovery in East Midnapore

In a major coordinated operation at Nikashi Bazar in Nandakumar, East Midnapore, police made a substantial recovery that included Rs 2 crore in unaccounted-for cash. Additionally, the raid led to the discovery of 16 illegal firearms and 20 rounds of ammunition, raising serious concerns about security and potential criminal activities in the area.

The seizure has ignited a political firestorm, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleging that the Trinamool Congress intended to use the money to influence voters in the Moyna region. In response, Trinamool representatives claimed that the funds were designated for cooperative society loans, setting the stage for a heated debate over the origins and purposes of the recovered assets.

Further Seizures in West Burdwan

Extending the scope of their operations, Railway Police in West Burdwan seized Rs 49.9 lakh in unaccounted-for cash and arrested two individuals from Patna in connection with the incident. This action underscores the widespread nature of the police crackdown, which is not limited to Kolkata but spans multiple districts in West Bengal.

These raids are part of a broader effort by law enforcement agencies to curb illegal activities and ensure transparency during the election period. The seizures of gold, cash, and firearms highlight the challenges faced by authorities in monitoring and regulating financial and security threats in the region.

The ongoing investigations are expected to delve deeper into the sources and intended uses of the seized items, with potential legal actions against those involved. As the political climate intensifies, these developments are likely to have significant implications for the upcoming electoral processes in West Bengal.
