Kolkata Traffic Police Intensifies Helmet Crackdown with Body Cameras

The Kolkata Traffic Police have intensified their crackdown on two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets for the fourth consecutive day. Authorities have instructed officers to record all enforcement actions using body cameras to ensure transparency and provide evidence in potential legal challenges.

Record Numbers of Violations

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rupesh Kumar reported that 221 cases of helmetless riding were recorded by 4 pm on Thursday, with the total rising to 775 cases by 8 pm. Between Monday and Wednesday, a total of 3,302 two-wheeler riders were penalized for not wearing helmets.

Use of Body Cameras

Police officials stated that officers conducting raids are required to wear body cameras and securely store the footage on servers. This measure is aimed at countering challenges from bikers who dispute the police action. The footage will be used as evidence in court. Additionally, videography of the areas is being carried out to document violations.
