Life term for mother, lover in Coimbatore child murder case

In a shocking verdict that has gripped Coimbatore, the III additional judicial magistrate court has delivered life imprisonment sentences to a woman and her lover for the brutal murder of her three-year-old daughter. The judgment, pronounced on Friday, brings closure to a tragic case that unfolded in 2019.

The Tragic Events of May 2019

Rubini, a 35-year-old woman from Velliangadu near Mettupalayam, had separated from her husband due to personal differences and was living independently. During this period, she developed an extramarital relationship with Sargunam, also a resident of Velliangadu. What began as a romantic connection soon turned deadly when Sargunam expressed his desire to marry Rubini and build a life together.

The couple perceived Rubini's young daughter as an obstacle to their happiness and made the horrific decision to eliminate the child. On May 26, 2019, they executed their sinister plan by taking the innocent girl to an isolated spot near the Karattu Medu area.

The Brutal Murder Method

The execution of the crime revealed the cold-blooded nature of the perpetrators. Sargunam first mixed poison in water and dipped a biscuit into the toxic solution. He then fed the poisoned biscuit to the unsuspecting child. When the little girl began crying after consuming the toxic treat, Sargunam took even more extreme measures.

Not satisfied with just poisoning, Sargunam proceeded to strangle the three-year-old using a handkerchief, ensuring her death. The calculated nature of the murder, involving multiple methods, highlighted the determination of the accused to eliminate the child they saw as an impediment to their relationship.

Legal Proceedings and Final Judgment

The Saravanampatti police registered a case immediately after the crime was discovered and subsequently arrested both Sargunam and Rubini. The investigation revealed the chilling details of how the mother conspired with her lover to murder her own child.

The trial proceeded in the III additional judicial magistrate court under Judge A K Babulal. After examining all evidence and witness testimonies, the court found both accused guilty of murder. On Friday, Judge Babulal pronounced the verdict, sentencing both Rubini and Sargunam to life imprisonment for their heinous crime.

This case serves as a grim reminder of how personal relationships can sometimes lead to unimaginable cruelty, even toward the most vulnerable members of society. The court's decision reinforces the legal system's commitment to delivering justice for victims, regardless of the perpetrators' relationship to them.
