Ludhiana Court Sentences Two Drug Peddlers to 10 Years

Ludhiana Court Imposes Severe Penalties on Drug Traffickers

In a significant ruling, a local court in Ludhiana has delivered a stern judgment against two individuals involved in drug peddling. The convicts, Gurmeet Singh Kaka, aged 34, and Arun Kumar, aged 23, have each been sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment. This decision comes after they were found in conscious possession of 2,000 intoxicant tablets, a case that underscores the ongoing battle against narcotics in the region.

Details of the Case and Legal Proceedings

The Judge Special Court, presided over by Jagdeep Sood, not only mandated the imprisonment but also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each convict. Failure to pay this fine will result in an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment for both individuals. The case dates back to July 23, 2022, when the Division Number Three police registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against Gurmeet Singh and Arun Kumar.

According to prosecution details, ASI Jatinder Singh, while on patrolling duty near Police Post Dharampura, received confidential information. This tip-off indicated that the accused, known for habitual involvement in contraband dealings, were approaching from Harcharan Nagar on an Activa scooter to supply drugs to customers. Acting on this, the police set up a check post, leading to the apprehension of both individuals.

Investigation and Recovery of Contraband

Sub-inspector Dharampal took over the investigation after being briefed by ASI Jatinder Singh. During the search, the police recovered a black polythene bag from the scooter's dickey, containing two transparent bags. Each bag held 1,000 intoxicant tablets, totaling 2,000 tablets. The accused failed to produce any license or permit for possessing these substances, strengthening the case against them.

Despite efforts to involve independent witnesses, none agreed due to personal reasons. Following the recovery, both Gurmeet Singh and Arun Kumar were arrested, and after a thorough investigation, a chargesheet was filed in court. During the trial, the accused pleaded false implication, but the court found the evidence compelling.

Court's Remarks on the Drug Menace

In its order on sentencing, the court made poignant observations about the drug crisis. It described the proliferation of drugs as a proxy war by inimical forces against the nation, highlighting how it has devastated families and corrupted the social fabric. The judge emphasized that the drug menace is alarmingly high, particularly affecting the youth and posing a severe threat to societal stability.

After evaluating the evidence, the court concluded that the prosecution had proven the charges under Section 22 of the NDPS Act beyond reasonable doubt. The intoxicant tablets, weighing 244 grams and containing Alprazolam salt, were categorized as commercial quantity, warranting the stringent penalties imposed.

This ruling serves as a stark reminder of the legal consequences for drug-related offenses and the judiciary's commitment to combating the narcotics trade in Punjab and beyond.
