Major Fire Engulfs Furniture Warehouses in Bhiwandi's Kasheli Area
A devastating fire broke out in the Kasheli area of Bhiwandi on Thursday morning, completely gutting several furniture warehouses in what is recognized as the largest and most affordable furniture market in Thane district. The blaze, which reportedly originated in a single godown at the Chamunda Complex, rapidly spread to neighboring units due to the highly combustible materials stored inside, including wood, foam, and fabrics.
Fire Spreads Rapidly, Causing Panic Among Traders
Fire officials confirmed that the flames engulfed approximately seven to ten adjoining warehouses within a remarkably short span, triggering widespread panic among traders in the bustling market area. The incident, occurring on the auspicious day of Gudi Padwa, dealt a severe financial blow to the warehouse owners, many of whom had stocked inventory for the festive season.
Intense Firefighting Efforts Over Five Hours
Teams from the Bhiwandi and Thane fire stations rushed to the scene and deployed multiple fire engines to combat the inferno. Fire officer Bapu Sonawane stated that the fire broke out at around 11:30 am and was finally brought under control after nearly five hours of relentless effort, around 5 pm. "No casualties have been reported in the incident. However, the fire caused extensive damage to multiple warehouses, with preliminary loss estimates running into several crores," a senior fire official disclosed.
Challenges Faced During Firefighting Operations
Firefighters initially encountered significant difficulties due to an acute shortage of water, which briefly hampered their operations. The situation improved substantially after additional water tankers were urgently brought in from the Thane Municipal Corporation, officials added. Authorities also noted that firefighting operations had to be conducted with extreme caution due to high-tension power lines passing directly over the affected structures, posing an additional safety hazard.
Investigation Underway to Determine Cause
The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined at this stage, officials confirmed, adding that a thorough investigation is currently underway. Forensic experts and fire department investigators are examining the site to ascertain whether the blaze resulted from an electrical short circuit, human negligence, or other factors. The incident has raised serious questions about fire safety protocols in the densely packed warehouse district.
Local Impact and Economic Consequences
The Kasheli furniture market is a crucial economic hub for Thane district, providing affordable furniture to thousands of customers across the region. The destruction of multiple warehouses is expected to disrupt supply chains and affect local businesses significantly. Traders expressed deep distress over the timing of the fire, which coincided with Gudi Padwa, traditionally a day of new beginnings and business prosperity in Maharashtra.
