A 32-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on charges of abetting the suicide of a 16-year-old schoolgirl in Erode district, Tamil Nadu. The Anthiyur police apprehended Sathish, a resident of Kallakurichi district, from his hideout at Thaniyalampattu in Villupuram district.
Details of the Incident
The victim, Dharani, daughter of Murugesan from Thavittupalayam near Anthiyur, hanged herself in a bathroom at her home on April 22. A day before her death, she told her parents that Sathish had been constantly calling her over the phone and threatening her. Police officials stated that it remains unclear how the accused obtained her phone number.
Harassment and Suicide
On April 22, Sathish verbally abused the girl's father over the phone. Distraught by this harassment, Dharani hanged herself in the bathroom when no one was home, according to a police officer. The girl's parents filed a petition at the district collector's office on Monday, alleging that police had not arrested the man even 27 days after her suicide.
Arrest and Legal Action
On Tuesday, the Anthiyur police arrested Sathish from his hideout. He was subsequently remanded in judicial custody. The case highlights the need for prompt action in cases of harassment and abetment to suicide.
