Raigad Police Arrests 24-Year-Old for Murder of 75-Year-Old Neighbour Over Debt
Man arrested for murdering elderly neighbour in Navi Mumbai

In a shocking incident from Raigad district, a young man has been arrested for the brutal murder of his elderly neighbour. The Raigad police's Local Crime Branch (LCB) team took a 24-year-old resident of Tal village in Mangaon taluka into custody for allegedly strangling a 75-year-old woman to death.

Technical Probe Leads to Arrest

According to senior inspector Mansingh Patil of the LCB, the breakthrough in the case came through technical investigation methods. The victim, identified as Lilavati Rajaram Balkawad, was found murdered in her ancestral house on November 29. She had gone to the property for cultivation work.

"During the probe using technical expertise, the suspected neighbour Abhijit Ambawale was zeroed-in," stated Patil. Following his detention for questioning, Ambawale reportedly confessed to the crime.

Debt from Online Loan Apps Motivated the Crime

The accused revealed a desperate motive driven by financial distress. Ambawale confessed that he killed Balkawad to rob her of her gold ornaments and mobile phone. He stated he was under severe debt and needed money to repay personal loans taken from relatives and friends.

Critically, the investigation uncovered that a significant pressure point was an instant online loan app debt of Rs 13,000. Ambawale claimed that the agents recovering the loan were aggressively demanding repayment, which pushed him to commit the heinous act.

Legal Action and Custody

The Raigad police have booked Abhijit Ambawale under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder and robbery committed with an attempt to cause death. The court has remanded the accused to police custody, where he will remain until December 5 for further interrogation and investigation.

This tragic case highlights the extreme lengths to which individuals can be driven by financial desperation and the severe consequences of harassment by loan recovery agents associated with digital lending platforms.
