Man Kills Wife, Fakes Accident in Belagavi

In a shocking case of domestic crime, Gokak Rural police arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly murdering his wife and attempting to pass it off as a road accident in Shindhikurbet village of Gokak taluk. The accused, identified as Santosh Patait, was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody on Tuesday.

Extramarital Affair Led to Tensions

According to police sources, Santosh had allegedly been involved in an extramarital relationship with a woman from the village for the past four years. His wife, Sakhubai Patait, 32, reportedly became aware of the affair nearly three months ago, leading to frequent disputes between the couple. Police said tensions escalated after Sakhubai warned her husband to end the relationship and threatened to inform the family.

Murder Plan Executed

Investigations reveal that on Friday, June 12, Santosh allegedly executed a plan to eliminate his wife. He is accused of mixing poison in a cold drink and forcing Sakhubai to consume it. When she fell unconscious, he allegedly strangled her to death.

Fake Accident Staged

To cover up the crime, the accused reportedly staged a fake accident by throwing a two-wheeler over the victim's body. Later that night, he contacted 112 emergency helpline and claimed that the incident was a road mishap. The victim was shifted to a government hospital in Gokak, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Investigation Uncovers Truth

Initially, Santosh maintained that it was an accident. However, suspicion raised by the victim's mother, Udchavva Ghodgeri of Tallur in Dharwad taluk, led to a formal complaint being filed. Acting on this, police launched a detailed investigation. Under the guidance of police inspector Suresh Babu, sub-inspector KB Walikar and his team examined the scene, medical reports, and other evidence. Discrepancies in the accused's version, along with forensic findings, exposed the incident as a case of murder.

Legal Action Taken

Subsequently, a case was registered against Santosh Patait on charges of murder and destruction of evidence. Following his arrest, he was produced in court and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway.
