Tragic Domestic Violence Over Dinner Dispute
In a shocking incident that highlights the grave consequences of domestic violence and alcoholism, a 32-year-old man in Odisha's Jajpur district brutally murdered his wife because she refused to cook chicken curry for dinner. The tragic event unfolded on Sunday night in the Mundasahi locality, leaving a family of six children without their mother.
The Fatal Evening Argument
Bhagirathi Putri, identified as the accused, returned home in an intoxicated state on Sunday evening and demanded that his wife Bela Putri (28) prepare chicken curry for dinner. The tribal couple, who both worked at a local brick kiln, had been married for several years and were parents to three minor sons and three daughters.
According to police reports, Bela refused her husband's demand citing illness and her unwell condition. This refusal triggered a sudden fit of rage in Bhagirathi, who then attacked his wife with a knife. The assault resulted in serious injuries that caused Bela to lose consciousness immediately.
Emergency Response and Arrest
Alerted by the commotion, some villagers rushed Bela to the community health centre at Jajpur Road. Unfortunately, doctors at the facility declared her dead upon arrival. The local police were immediately notified about the incident.
Ashis Kumar Sahoo, the inspector in-charge of Jajpur Road police station, confirmed that a police team quickly reached Mundasahi and arrested Bhagirathi. "We have seized the body and sent it to the district government hospital in Jajpur for an autopsy. Police are investigating the case," Sahoo stated.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
The accused has been formally charged under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Bhagirathi was produced before the local court on Monday where his bail application was rejected outright. The court remanded him to jail custody as the investigation continues.
This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the Mundasahi community and highlights the persistent issues of domestic violence and alcohol abuse in tribal areas. The couple's six children now face an uncertain future without either parent, as their father remains in judicial custody and their mother has become another statistic in India's disturbing domestic violence records.
