Kerala Man Rescued from 30-Foot Deep Well After Exhaustion During Cleaning Operation
In a dramatic rescue operation on Tuesday afternoon, fire and rescue personnel successfully saved a man who became trapped in a 30-foot deep well at his residential premises in Aluva, Kerala. The incident unfolded at the home of P K Rejikumar in Pulayamthuruth, Kuttamassery, highlighting the dangers of routine maintenance tasks.
Routine Maintenance Turns Perilous
P K Rejikumar had climbed down the well to perform regular cleaning and maintenance, a task he undertook with the assistance of his wife and children from above. The well contained approximately five feet of water, and Rejikumar spent a considerable amount of time diligently removing accumulated mud and debris to ensure the well's functionality.
After completing the cleaning work, Rejikumar attempted to ascend using a rope. However, due to physical exertion and fatigue from the strenuous activity, he found himself unable to climb back to the surface. This sudden inability to exit the well created a critical and life-threatening situation for the trapped individual.
Swift Emergency Response
Realising the gravity of the predicament, Rejikumar's family immediately contacted the Aluva fire station for urgent assistance. A dedicated rescue team was dispatched promptly and arrived at the scene around 4:30 PM, demonstrating the efficiency of emergency services in responding to such crises.
The rescue operation involved fireman M Sajad descending into the narrow well shaft to reach Rejikumar. Using specialised rescue equipment, Sajad secured the exhausted man inside a safety net, ensuring his protection during the extraction process. The team above then carefully hoisted Rejikumar to the surface, where he was brought to safety without sustaining any serious injuries.
Lessons in Safety and Preparedness
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential hazards associated with domestic maintenance activities, especially those involving confined spaces like wells. It underscores the importance of having safety protocols and proper equipment when undertaking such tasks to prevent accidents.
The successful rescue by the Aluva fire department highlights the critical role of trained emergency personnel in handling complex situations. Their swift action and expertise ensured a positive outcome, averting what could have been a tragic event in the community.
