Mangaluru Police Inspector Suspended Amid Serious Misconduct Allegations
In a significant development, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has placed Inspector Sandesh from the Moodubidire police station under suspension. This action follows serious allegations of misconduct, including accusations that the officer sought either a bribe or sexual favours from a woman complainant.
Investigation and Media Statements
Commissioner Reddy, addressing the media on Tuesday, referenced a probe conducted by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of the Mangaluru North subdivision. The investigation was initiated after a woman came forward with allegations against Inspector Sandesh. The complainant also made a detailed statement to the media, amplifying the case's visibility.
He noted that there are ongoing family disputes between the woman and her sister, with two cases registered against each of them. One of these cases involves Inspector Sandesh directly. Except for one case currently under active investigation, the others have been stayed by the high court, adding a layer of legal complexity to the situation.
Additional Allegations and Evidence Review
On allegations made by another woman in the media against the same inspector, the commissioner provided further context. He stated that there are four cases registered against her husband, who has been acquitted in one of them. In another case, both she and her husband are accused of misusing funds collected for the kidney treatment of a poor person. A chargesheet has been filed in this matter after evidence was gathered.
However, Commissioner Reddy clarified that no evidence of harassment by Inspector Sandesh has been found in her specific case. The location where she alleged misconduct and sought a bribe is covered by CCTV cameras. Two mediapersons and a lawyer who were present at the time have denied any such demand for money or harassment, casting doubt on these particular claims.
Viral Audio and Video Evidence
The commissioner further clarified that the women who spoke to the media are not the same individuals seen in the viral video and audio clips that have circulated widely. Despite this, the footage and audio clearly show Inspector Sandesh engaging in questionable behaviour and speaking inappropriately to a woman over the phone, which has raised public concern.
Both women seen in these clips have declined to file formal complaints at this time. However, they have been informed that they may record their statements at a later stage if they choose to do so.
Suspension and Ongoing Inquiry
In view of the contents of the video and audio, which indicate inappropriate conduct towards women, Commissioner Reddy has placed Inspector Sandesh under suspension. He emphasized that a detailed inquiry will follow to thoroughly investigate all aspects of the case and ensure accountability.
Meanwhile, in a related development, Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Shashidhar S Kosambe has taken suo motu cognisance following the circulation of the audio clip related to this incident. This indicates that the matter may have broader implications beyond the immediate police disciplinary proceedings.
