Margao Court Hands Down 10-Year Sentence in Attempted Murder Case
A Margao court delivered a strong verdict in a violent assault case from early last year. The principal sessions court sentenced Bharat Bhomaram Choudhary to ten years of rigorous imprisonment. He must also pay a fine of one lakh rupees.
Violent Attack Followed Business Dispute
Bharat Choudhary worked at a hardware shop owned by Dungraram Lalit Choudhary. The two men had a disagreement related to their business. This conflict escalated dramatically in January 2023.
Bharat attacked his employer with a sharp agricultural tool known as a sickle or koita. The assault caused serious and grievous injuries to Dungraram. He required immediate medical attention following the violent incident.
Court Cites Clear Intent to Kill
Principal Sessions Judge Sherin G Paul presided over the case. The judge noted the prosecution presented a strong argument. They examined fourteen different witnesses who supported their version of events.
Judge Paul stated the evidence was consistent and convincing. The nature of the weapon chosen for the attack proved significant. So did the severity of the injuries inflicted on the victim.
"The manner of the attack proves beyond reasonable doubt that the accused attempted to commit murder," the judge observed. The court concluded Bharat's actions showed a clear intention that could have resulted in death.
Financial Penalty and Compensation Ordered
The court did not stop at the prison sentence. It imposed a substantial financial penalty on the convicted man. Bharat Choudhary must pay a fine of Rs 1,00,000.
The court issued specific instructions about this money. It directed that half of the fine amount, Rs 50,000, should go to the victim. This sum will serve as compensation for Dungraram Lalit Choudhary.
The judgment includes a stern warning about the fine. If Bharat fails to pay the one lakh rupees, he will face additional jail time. He would have to undergo two more years of simple imprisonment.
The case highlights the serious consequences of workplace violence. The Margao court's decision sends a clear message about such criminal actions.
