The alert was based on reports of suspicious movement in villages situated between the Thanamandi and Manjakote subdivisions of Jammu. Troops from the 49 Rashtriya Rifles, joined by personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police and its Special Operations Group (SOG), swiftly cordoned off the identified areas to conduct thorough searches.

As day broke on Friday, the search operations intensified. Forces carried out aggressive combing exercises in specific areas, including Behrote Gali. For instance, on December 17, a similar combing operation was conducted in the Mansar area of Samba district. In that instance, local residents reported seeing suspicious movement, prompting an immediate response. A police team rushed to the scene and was later reinforced by Army and CRPF personnel to sanitize the area.
