Punjab Police Raid Village After Viral Drug Abuse Video

The Punjab Police on Saturday carried out a cordon and search operation (CASO) at Phulewala village in the Malout subdivision of Muktsar district, following the circulation of a video on social media that allegedly depicted drug abuse activities in the area.

Police Action Triggered by Viral Video

The video, which went viral a day before the operation, showed used aluminium foil pieces and other materials suspected to be linked to drug consumption scattered inside an abandoned room. Local residents reportedly alerted authorities after the video gained widespread attention on platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook.

Acting on the tip-off, a team from the Malout police station, led by the Station House Officer (SHO), reached the village early Saturday morning. The police cordoned off the village and conducted door-to-door searches in the vicinity of the abandoned structure.

Detentions and Investigation

During the operation, several suspects were detained for verification. However, the police did not specify whether any contraband was seized. A police spokesperson stated that the investigation is ongoing and that the detained individuals are being questioned to trace the source of the drugs and those involved in the consumption.

The abandoned room, located on the outskirts of the village, has been sealed for forensic examination. Police officials said they are also reviewing CCTV footage from nearby establishments to identify any suspicious activities.

Context of Drug Abuse in Punjab

The incident highlights the persistent drug abuse problem in Punjab, particularly in the Malwa region. Over the past decade, the state has seen numerous drug-related raids and arrests, with authorities cracking down on both drug peddlers and consumers. The viral video has sparked concerns among local residents, who have demanded stricter action against drug networks operating in rural areas.

Muktsar district, known for its agricultural base, has reported a rise in drug abuse cases, especially among the youth. Social activists have repeatedly called for more effective rehabilitation programs and community policing to combat the issue.

Police Response and Community Reaction

The police have urged the public to report any suspicious drug-related activities through the helpline number 1090 for women and 112 for general emergencies. Meanwhile, village elders have held a meeting with the police to discuss preventive measures. The sarpanch of Phulewala expressed gratitude for the swift action but stressed the need for sustained vigilance.

The operation concluded around 2 PM, and normalcy was restored in the village. Further investigations are underway, and police have promised to take strict action against anyone found guilty.
