Heightened Security Risks in Black Sea Region
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a fresh advisory urging Indian nationals to carefully evaluate security threats before accepting employment on commercial vessels operating in the Black Sea and adjacent waters. The region remains volatile due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with commercial ships facing significant dangers including missile and drone strikes. Since April 2026, there has been a marked increase in such incidents, resulting in the tragic loss of five Indian lives, according to the MEA.

The advisory emphasizes that Indian seafarers should obtain comprehensive information from employers, recruitment agencies, and ship operators about the vessel's intended route, ports of call, security arrangements, insurance coverage, and emergency response procedures. It also stresses that employment terms must comply with international maritime standards and include provisions for medical care, evacuation, repatriation, and compensation in emergencies.
"Commercial vessels operating in or transiting these waters are facing significant security risks, including missile and drone attacks," the MEA stated, noting the uptick in attacks since April 2026. The government advises seafarers to keep family members informed of their itinerary and maintain regular contact, as well as to monitor advisories from the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) and other relevant authorities.
