The Meghalaya government has constituted a one-member Commission of Inquiry, headed by retired judge Justice T Vaiphei, to probe the social unrest and violence in the Garo Hills that claimed two lives. The violence erupted following the filing of nomination papers for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections on March 9.
A notification issued by the home (political) department on May 8 stated that the commission will examine the "larger issues arising out of the violence and social disturbances and the subsequent loss of human lives and properties." The commission is tasked with examining the circumstances that led to the violence, identifying acts or omissions by individuals and authorities, and determining whether there was any failure in preventing the disturbances.
Additionally, the commission will study the root causes of the unrest and recommend administrative and institutional reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future. It will also suggest measures such as financial assistance for those who suffered loss of life or property. The commission has been directed to submit its report to the state government within six months from the date of the notification.
