The Meghalaya government has approached the Supreme Court challenging the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in the northeastern state in 2025.
Supreme Court Hearing
On Thursday, a Bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Sheel Nagu was informed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that the Meghalaya High Court had erred in granting bail to the accused. Mehta urged the court to list the matter urgently.
Mehta argued that the bail was granted on the ground that the grounds of arrest were not fully supplied to her at the time of arrest. However, he clarified that the non-supply of documents pertained to a provision that was wrongly cited due to a typographical error. He further emphasized the risk of the accused absconding.
Background of the Case
On June 29, the Meghalaya High Court upheld a trial court order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi. The couple had gone missing while vacationing in Meghalaya's Sohra area on May 23, 2025. Raja Raghuvanshi's body was subsequently recovered from a deep gorge on June 2, 2025.
Police have alleged that Sonam Raghuvanshi conspired with hired assailants to kill her husband for financial gains. The case has drawn significant public attention due to its sensational nature.
Legal Implications
The Supreme Court has agreed to list the matter for hearing on Friday. The Meghalaya government's appeal seeks to overturn the bail order, citing the seriousness of the crime and the potential for the accused to flee. The outcome of this hearing could set a precedent in cases involving similar circumstances.
