Lionel Messi's management team has formally written to the Kolkata Police, holding former West Bengal minister Aroop Biswas responsible for the chaotic situation during a football event held at the Salt Lake Stadium on December 13 last year. The complaint, submitted on June 17, 2026, alleges that Biswas, who was then the state's sports minister, failed to ensure proper security and crowd management, leading to a near-riot situation that endangered the safety of players and fans alike.
Event Details and Allegations
The event, which featured Argentine football legend Lionel Messi, was marred by overcrowding, lack of adequate barricades, and poor coordination among security personnel. According to the complaint, the mismanagement was a direct result of the minister's negligence. Messi's team claims that despite prior assurances, the necessary arrangements were not made, causing panic and confusion among attendees.
Police Investigation Underway
Kolkata Police have acknowledged receipt of the complaint and have initiated an inquiry. Sources indicate that the police are examining video footage and witness statements to ascertain the sequence of events. The complaint names Biswas and several unnamed officials from the sports department for their alleged roles in the lapse.
Biswas, who was removed from the sports portfolio earlier this year, has denied all allegations, calling them baseless. He stated that the event was organized with full compliance and that any shortcomings were due to unforeseen circumstances.
The incident has sparked a political row, with opposition parties demanding a thorough investigation. The state government has remained cautious, stating that they will await the police report before taking any action.
