In a shocking incident in Mohali, police have arrested two persons, including a security guard, for allegedly robbing a cash carrier of Rs 4 lakh at an ATM kiosk by throwing chilli powder into his eyes. The brazen crime took place in Phase 7 on February 14, 2026, and has raised serious concerns about security protocols at financial facilities.
Details of the Arrest and Recovery
The accused, identified as Nissan Masih, a resident of Ferozepur currently living in Sohana, Mohali, and Maninder Singh, a resident of Moga also residing in Sohana, were allegedly under the influence of drugs when they committed the crime in broad daylight. Following their arrest, police made significant recoveries, including:
- Rs 2 lakh in cash
- The motorcycle used in the crime
- A knife
- Clothes worn during the offence
- Two mobile phones allegedly purchased using the looted money
Both individuals were produced in court and remanded in police custody for further interrogation. A case has been registered at the Mataur police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
How the Robbery Unfolded
The incident occurred around 2:30 PM on February 14, when Biku Kumar, an employee of Gurjot Singh—a resident of Phase 3B2 who employs around 10 workers for cash collection and deposit—went to deposit Rs 4 lakh at an ATM kiosk. According to police reports, the two accused entered the kiosk, threw chilli powder into Kumar's eyes, snatched the cash bag, and fled the scene.
Investigations revealed a disturbing twist: Nissan Masih had been working as a security guard at the same ATM for nearly three months. Police stated that he conducted a recce, leveraging his position to know that the employee regularly visited the ATM with cash. Acting on his disclosure, authorities arrested his accomplice, Maninder Singh, and added relevant sections to the case.
Broader Implications and Ongoing Investigation
This incident highlights vulnerabilities in ATM security and the potential for insider threats. The use of chilli powder as a weapon to incapacitate the victim adds a dangerous dimension to such crimes. Police have emphasized that further investigation is underway to uncover any additional links or motives behind the heist.
The arrest serves as a reminder for businesses and financial institutions to enhance security measures, especially for cash handling procedures. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around ATMs or banking facilities.
