Mumbai Police Takes Action Against Officers Following Activist Complaint
The Mumbai police department has taken disciplinary action against several officers following complaints filed by Bajrang Dal activists. Two police officers have been suspended and an official enquiry has been ordered against five officials after allegations of misconduct surfaced during an incident at Oshiwara police station.
What Triggered the Police Action
According to an order issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone IX) Dixit Gedam, the situation began when Bajrang Dal district convenor Shankar alias Rushav Jadhav arrived at the Oshiwara police station with approximately 10-15 activists. The group came to report an incident where someone had allegedly misbehaved with a woman in Jogeshwari area.
The order stated that the activists verbally demanded strict action against the concerned individual. A senior police official engaged with the group and assured them that appropriate measures would be taken according to established procedures and rules.
The Confrontation and Subsequent Complaints
Despite receiving assurances from senior officers, the Bajrang Dal activists remained within the police station premises near the entrance. It was during this time that five police officers allegedly shouted at the activists and misbehaved with them for blocking the entrance to the police station.
The Mumbai police order specifically noted that the officers behaved in a manner that was "unbecoming of the police force" and that "their behavior has tarnished the image of the police force." This strong wording in the official document underscores the seriousness with which police authorities are treating the allegations.
Official Response and Disciplinary Measures
In response to the incident, DCP Gedam issued orders to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Bandra division) directing a preliminary inquiry against five sub-inspectors from Oshiwara Police Station. The officers named in the enquiry include:
- Sub-Inspector Ramesh Kengar
- Sub-Inspector Ganesh Gayke
- Sub-Inspector Babu Totre
- Sub-Inspector Deepak Barve
- Sub-Inspector Azim Zari
The investigating authorities have been given seven days to submit their report to the DCP zone IX office. A senior police official confirmed that among the five officers under investigation, two have already been placed under suspension pending the outcome of the enquiry.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining professional conduct while dealing with public complaints and activist groups. The swift action taken by Mumbai police authorities demonstrates their commitment to addressing allegations of misconduct within the force promptly and transparently.
