Mumbai Manhole Death: 4 Civic Officials Suspended

Man Dies After Falling into Open Manhole in Mumbai

A 35-year-old man died after falling into an open manhole in Mumbai's Sakinaka area during heavy rainfall on Monday. The incident occurred just two days after the Bombay High Court directed the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to ensure no citizen dies in open manholes.

Four Civic Officials Suspended

The BMC suspended four officials, including a junior engineer and three contractors, for negligence. The deceased, identified as Rajesh Sharma, a local resident, slipped into the manhole that was left uncovered during the downpour. Rescue teams retrieved his body after a two-hour search.

Bombay High Court's Recent Directive

On June 29, the Bombay High Court had asked the BMC to take immediate steps to prevent such tragedies. The court warned of strict action if any further deaths occurred. Despite this, the latest incident has raised questions about the corporation's compliance.

Heavy Rains Batter Mumbai

Mumbai has been experiencing heavy rainfall since last week, leading to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and accidents. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for the city, predicting more downpours in the coming days. The BMC has deployed rescue teams but citizens continue to face hazards.

Official Response

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani said, "We have suspended the officials responsible for this negligence. An inquiry has been ordered, and we will take all measures to ensure such incidents do not recur." He added that the corporation is working to cover all open manholes in the city.

Public Outrage and Safety Concerns

Local residents protested near the site, demanding better infrastructure and accountability. Activist Sunita Patil stated, "Every monsoon, lives are lost due to open manholes. The BMC must act before more people die." The incident has sparked a debate on urban safety during monsoons.
