Mumbai Police Cracks Down on Gas Cylinder Theft Ring Across Metropolitan Region

The operation led to the seizure of 45 stolen gas cylinders and the arrest of a habitual offender with a history of multiple theft cases.

Investigation Unravels Theft Network Following Motorcycle Theft Case

The racket came to light after a motorcycle theft was reported at the Powai Police Station. During the subsequent investigation, authorities discovered that the stolen two-wheeler was being utilized to carry out gas cylinder thefts at various locations throughout the metropolitan area.

Leveraging technical surveillance and crucial inputs from informants, the police apprehended Raj Chandrakant Kamble, an 18-year-old resident of Thane. Along with his arrest, the stolen motorcycle used in the criminal activities was recovered. Kamble has been implicated in at least 15 theft cases registered across several police stations, highlighting his extensive involvement in illicit operations.

Link to West Asia Conflict and Escalating Theft Incidents

A senior officer from the Powai police revealed that the investigation uncovered the gang's activation and increased involvement in stealing gas cylinders coinciding with the outbreak of the Iran war. The stolen cylinders are reportedly sold at inflated prices to individuals seeking immediate access, capitalizing on the heightened demand amid supply disruptions.

LPG cylinder thefts have surged in Mumbai due to shortages triggered by West Asia conflict-related supply chain interruptions. Notable incidents include the theft of 27 cylinders from a parked delivery tempo in Charkop and the recent recovery of 45 cylinders by the Powai police. In response to the rising thefts, many residents have resorted to chaining their cylinders as a security measure to prevent further losses.

The crackdown underscores the police's proactive efforts to combat organized crime and address the growing concerns over essential commodity thefts in the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent future incidents and ensure public safety.
