A tragic road accident in Nagpur district claimed the life of a 60-year-old man on Sunday evening. The autorickshaw he was traveling in overturned, allegedly because the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
Driver Faces Severe Legal Consequences
The autorickshaw driver now confronts the possibility of up to ten years behind bars. Police have booked him under non-bailable offences following the fatal incident.
Details of the Fatal Evening
The accident happened near Rajni Road in Savargaon village, located within the Narkhed taluka of Nagpur district. According to police reports, the victim, Dnyaneshwar Wagde, hailed from Banor village.
Wagde had hired an autorickshaw driven by 32-year-old Sachin Satpute. His purpose was to transport sacks of brinjals to Tapani village. After successfully completing the delivery, Wagde boarded the same vehicle to return home around 8 pm.
A Loss of Control Proves Fatal
During the return journey, the driver reportedly lost control of the autorickshaw. The vehicle overturned on the road. This resulted in severe, fatal injuries to the elderly passenger.
Dnyaneshwar Wagde succumbed to his injuries at the accident site itself. He died on the spot, leaving his family in shock and grief.
Family Alleges Drunken and Reckless Driving
The victim's 26-year-old son, Harshal, approached the Narkhed police station to file a formal complaint. In his statement, Harshal alleged that the driver, Sachin Satpute, was heavily intoxicated.
He further accused Satpute of operating the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner, which directly led to the tragic accident.
Police Investigation Confirms Alcohol Influence
Law enforcement authorities launched a thorough investigation into the case. This included a mandatory medical examination of the accused driver.
The investigation conclusively confirmed that Sachin Satpute was under the influence of alcohol at the precise time of the accident. Based on this evidence, police placed him under arrest.
Stringent Charges Filed Against the Driver
Police have registered a formal case against the autorickshaw driver. The charges are severe and reflect the gravity of the incident.
He faces prosecution under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Additionally, charges have been filed under Sections 184 and 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
Section 184 pertains to dangerous driving, while Section 185 specifically addresses the offence of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The combination of these charges underscores the serious legal repercussions for driving while intoxicated, especially when it results in loss of life.
