A tragic start to the New Year unfolded in North Nagpur, where a 40-year-old labourer has been accused of murdering his wife on the eve of the celebrations. The incident, driven by alleged suspicion of infidelity, has sent shockwaves through the local community.
What Happened in Yashodhara Nagar?
The victim, identified as 35-year-old Rameshwaribai, was allegedly killed by her husband, Deven Mane, at their rented home in Shahu Mohalla's Kinkheda Layout. The couple, originally from Balaghat district in Madhya Pradesh, had moved to Nagpur approximately two months ago in search of work, leaving their two children with relatives back in their village.
According to police reports, the relationship was strained by frequent disputes. Tensions reportedly reached a breaking point after Rameshwaribai expressed her desire to return to their hometown and had arranged nearly Rs 3,000 for travel expenses. This act seemingly fuelled Mane's existing suspicions and jealousy.
The Fatal Night and Attempted Cover-Up
The situation turned deadly around 9 pm on Wednesday, New Year's eve. Police state that Mane, who was under the influence of alcohol, engaged in a heated argument with his wife. During the altercation, he allegedly used a towel to throttle her and brutally thrashed her, causing fatal injuries.
In a bid to mislead others, Mane later contacted his brother-in-law, Ramkisan Pache, claiming that Rameshwaribai was seriously ill and vomiting blood. However, when Pache arrived at the scene, he immediately noticed the injuries on her body and alerted the Yashodhara Nagar police.
Police Investigation and Arrest
A police team swiftly arrived and found clear signs of foul play. Deven Mane was taken into custody on the spot, and a case of murder was registered against him. Preliminary investigations point to jealousy and suspicion of an extramarital relationship as the primary motive behind this gruesome crime.
The police have confirmed that further investigation into the matter is ongoing. The case highlights a devastating instance of domestic violence, cutting short a life and orphaning two children at the onset of a new year.
